From the Pastor's Desk

Pastor Scott Smith and wife, Maria

Luke 22:27 “For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves.”

The answer to Jesus’ question seems to be all too simple for us. Of course the person sitting at the table is greater. That’s how things work in our world; the lesser serve the greater. It honestly becomes easy for us to consider ourselves greater than those who find themselves in positions of service; just pay attention in the check out line at the grocery store or in your favorite restaurant. But as with most of our assumptions, Jesus turns that idea upside down. He was, is, and always will be the greatest; yet He came not to be served but to serve (Matt 20:28). What Jesus was teaching goes far beyond employment types or positions, it is a heart condition. We are called to follow the footsteps of our Savior, and His path leads us down the road of sacrificial service to others. Friends, if we want to be considered worthy of our calling, we must take heed of this simple lesson, one from the greatest servant ever. Our life is not measured by our earthly wealth, stature, and success; it is gauged by our acts of service to others. If we wish to spread the love and grace of our God it must come through a genuine attitude of love and service. Living a life of service and concern for others, putting them above ourselves, is what Jesus asks of us. And I don’t know about you, but I someday want to hear “Well done, good and faithful servant”.

In His Grip,
Scott
